You can't love what I see,
The mirror tells lies,
Reflects to you what must be.

You can't trust even you,
Your doubt won't believe,
So it kills what it is true. "

What is Eating Disorder?

An eating disorder is a compulsion to eat in a way that disturbs physical health.
The best-known eating disorders are Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia.
The most widely and rapidly spreading eating disorder is compulsive overeating or binge eating or purging.

The conditions are very common in adolescents (more often in girls that boys)) , but can happen at any age.

10-15% of all Americans suffer from some type of eating disorder. These illnesses can last anywhere from 5-15 years or more. The longer the duration of the illness, the greater chance of death or severe, irreversible medical consequences. Eating disorders are progressive and can result in serious mental and physical illness or death.

The main criteria for Anorexia nervosa:

1) Refusal to maintain normal body weight
2) Loss to < 85% of expected body weight
3) Intense fear of becoming fat
4) Disturbance of body image
5) Hyperactivity
6) Amenorrhoea (absence of periods)
7) Denial of the problem

The main criteria for Bulimia

1) Recurrent episodes of binge eating abnormal quantity of food
2) A sense of lack of control during the binge
3) Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain
(e.g. self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, enemas etc.)
4) Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight
5) Hyperactivity
6) Denial of the problem

Binge eating is episodes of uncontrolled eating , but unlike bulimia the sufferers do not purge their bodies of excess food.
Some people with anorexia nervosa share clinical features in common with people with bulimia and very often both these conditions coexist.
Associated psychological problems in anorexia (and sometimes in bulimia) include depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety symptoms usually focused on eating; marked social withdrawal and obsessive behavior concerning food, weight, diet and exercise. Many people are perfectionists and preoccupied with external appearance.

What is eating disorder about ?

Many people just associate this problem with food and/or dieting. But this is not the case. This is not about food and dieting.

Eating disorder is disorder of feelings. For eating disorder sufferers food abuse helps them to respond to their feelings, thus allowing the individual to avoid, postpone, forget, deny, or otherwise anesthetize their feelings. For them keeping a safe emotional distance precludes the risk that others will discover their real self and hurt them.

Eating disorder is disorder of control. The patients  perceived that they can't control anything in their lives except their food intake and weight. They perceive that controlling their weight and food intake will enabled them to keep their uncontrollable life in balance.

Eating disorder is disorder of thinkingThe sufferers are thinking in distorted way about themselves, the world, and the place they live in. They think that gaining even 1 kilo invariably leads to gaining 10 to 20 kilos.
Their misconception about how they looked called body image distortion (they think that they are fat although they are actually very thin).

Eating disorder is disorder of coping. For the patients their eating disorder is the way they coped with everyday stress: with their school, homework and pressure from their friends.

Eating disorder is disorder of identity. Eating disorder sufferers have a poor sense of self and an eating disorder  becomes a substitute for their self.  One girl sufferer described once that being without her disease was as unthinkable for her as being without air to breathe. When she was in hospital, she was afraid that if she recovered she would “cease to exist”.

Eating disorder is disorder of values and lifestyle. For some patients spending time with themselves and binging are much more important than going out, seeing friends and socialize. The eating disorder becomes their life style, their entertainment and interest in life.

Eating disorder is disorder of relationship. One of the patient once told a counselor: “My best friend always there for me” it was her describing the eating disorder, she perceived it like her “best friend”, unlike those hurtful and rejecting people the disease was a comfort. Patients become very withdrawn, and did not want to see anyone. It seems, they are OK staying just them and there eating disorder together.

Eating disorder is disorder of behavior. The extreme, unbending and compulsive nature of unbalanced eating behaviors is the main feature of the disease. Patients  do not know how to stop: if they eliminated one meal, it would be preferable to eliminate two; if they lost some weight they would feel that they need to lose more and more.

Treatment and management:

-cognitive behavior therapy
                               - structured behavioral therapy
                                -intensive psychotherapy
                                -family therapy
-Positive Energy Treatment' (coined by Dr Irina Webster),
Developed by Karen Phillips see Mom Please Help below?
The most important feature of therapy is supportive care and ongoing support by physicians and allied health staff  to a certain stage. But you can also do lots at home if you know How.
Antidepressants may be helpful for selected patients with a co-morbid depressive illness.

                                              MEDICAL UPDATE.
A new report out of Germany (Universitat Jaume)  found nearly 50% of young women with anorexia or bulimia also suffer from some kind of personality disorder. It was also reported that the most frequent personality disorder patterns were those of an avoidant and self-destructive type. Since these patterns are accompanied by eating disorders, they can play a significant role in the failure development of treatments for anorexia and bulimia.

One of the puzzling mysteries with the treatment methods used in Anorexia and Bulimia is the high percentage of relapses.  Researchers believe that by studying how personality disorders influence the tendency to relapse in anorexia and bulimia sufferers they may be able to formulate a better treatment regime.

One important detail to take into account is the fact that sufferers of a personality disorder have a much higher predictability rate with respect to the seriousness and the closeness with other disorders. Some of these include those of mood, the number of suicide attempts, or the number of personality disorder patients admitted to hospital, as well as there response to treatment.

The result seems to support the increasingly widespread idea for the need to design and validate programs for treating eating behavior disorders which will include components and strategies that can also be aimed at treating  the sufferers of personality disorders, the researchers concluded.

Recent Eating Disorder Information

Did you know  resent research by world renowned anti-aging specialist Dr Marios Kyriazis who has formulated a process for working out how long an Eating Disorder Sufferer will live. States: that an Eating Disorder sufferer will shorten their lives markedly every year they continue to starve themselves and most can't not expect to live much passed the age of 60. As the average life expectance for a women is now 85 years, sufferers of Anorexia and Bulimia are shortening their lives by 25 to 30 years. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't want this to happen to my daughter or any one else? It would mean in all probability that I would out live her and that to me would be totally unacceptable.

Dr Kyriazis has based his research on the study of movie stars and famous women. He found that women like Nicole Kidman (life expectancy 63yrs). Nicole Richie (life expectancy 60yrs) and Renee Zellweger (life expectancy 55yrs) are all know Eating Disorder sufferers. The worst of all the famous Eating Disorder sufferers is the Ex Spice Girl, Posh Spice who has a life expectancy of only 54yrs. All for what: just so they can fit into a size 6 or 7 dress and think they look good. This is not the future I want for my child and I am sure not for yours either.

Why these women or any Eating Disorder sufferer would go to these lengths to have that waif look is just beyond me. The facts are that most men according to Dr Kyriazis research 75% actually do not like skinny women and prefer curvy girls. Why these women or any Eating Disorder sufferer knowing these facts still continue to starve themselves is a mystery. But die early they will and these are the cold hard facts and unless you do something about your loved one you are facing a very real scenario exactly like this one happening to them.

When my daughter nearly died in hospital from Anorexia-Bulimia I was absolutely determined to find a cure for this dreadful disease.
Now a few years later she is completely healthy - physically and emotionally, and I am very proud of her and myself for what
we've done.

Even a doctor was surprised by the effectiveness of the treatment I discovered and now she recommends this treatment to her anorexia- bulimia sufferers.

Dear Friend.
Getting the right help for an eating disorder isn’t easy.
Why you may ask? Because many people relapse and suffer, even after repeated treatment programs and hospital stays.

Medical literature often characterizes eating disorders as “cunning” and“baffling.” It doesn’t have to be that way, but how do you find the best treatment possible?

My name is Karen Phillips and I am the mother of a girl (Amy) who suffered from severe Anorexia - Bulimia since age 13. Her battle with this disorder lasted nearly 10 years.

She nearly died once in hospital and survived. And it was this episode that became a turning point for both of us. I promised myself I would do whatever it took to find the right treatment for Anorexia-Bulimia regardless of the cost, and I did.

I am now offering an individual home treatment program I developed during the years of battling with Amy's anorexia-bulimia. So if you are a sufferer you can beat these conditions too. It is all explained in this article so keep reading. I can tell you, you will not be disappointed.

I have read her program and I can tell you I believe it is a breakthrough in dealing with eating disorders and I have coined the phrase
'Positive Energy Treatment' to describe it.
I have looked into the methods she describes in her book and I can tell you as a medical professional I am only to happy to endorse them.
Karen stumbled on her 'Positive Energy Treatment' program that is only now being looked at as a serious treatment for eating disorders, by myself and others.
I am so convinced that Karen has really found a method for dealing with eating disorders that I have listed the book on my own website, at only $38.50 it is absolutely fantastic and I have now helped her create an Adult version.

Thank You Dr Irina Webster.
